LEGISLATIVE ALERT
Proposed Legislation Would Expand Sales Tax to 29 Additional Services
Are You on the List?
On Tuesday March 6th, the Maryland House of Delegates Ways & Means Committee will hold a hearing on twelve bills, one of which is HB 1051, which proposes to extend the sales tax to 29 additional services, including the following: tax preparation, management consulting and business consulting, real property management, testing labs, staffing services, drafting, and business brokerage services; cable TV; motor vehicle maintenance or repair (to include service or warranty contracts); vehicle washing or waxing services; road service and towing; motor vehicle painting, rustproofing and undercoating; parking facilities; barber or beauty service; tanning, massage and physical fitness facility or service; shoe repair; weighing machine service; public locker rental or service; dating service; dieting service; direct mail advertising service; commercial photographic or art service; stenographic service; exterminating service; sign painting; interior decorating; business brokerage; notary public service and shop window decorating service!
The Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber strongly opposes this expansion of the sales tax, and urges you to let your elected officials know of your opposition by calling or writing your elected official (find their names and contact information here- and contact legislators for both your HOME and BUSINESS address), or by testifying before the Ways and Means Committee.
If you wish to testify, the hearing will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6. Anyone wishing to testify should arrive early and sign the witness register before the hearing begins. If you have written testimony, please submit 35 copies to the committee staff for distribution one hour prior to the hearing.
The Ways and Means Committee meets in Room 130 of the House Office Building, 6 Bladen St., Annapolis, MD 21401. There are twelve bills that will be heard on March 6, and the order that they are listed on the schedule is not necessarily the order in which they will be considered.
As always, if you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Walt Townshend or Shirley Redd at the BWCC.
