AFCEA Central Maryland 6th Annual Race For Excellence 5k and 1-Mile Fun Run

(Annapolis Junction, MD) March 8, 2013 – The Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association (AFCEA) Central Maryland Chapter (CMD) is pleased to announce that on April 27th it will be holding the 6th annual 2013 Race for Excellence 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run.  The race benefits AFCEA’s Central Maryland Scholarship Fund, which provides merit-based college scholarships to deserving local high-school students.

Truly a community event, over 30 companies and local vendors help sponsor the event. Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) [NYSE: SAI] is a long standing partner of AFCEA CMD, providing the race location and considerable support. The spectator-friendly race includes two courses, a 5K and a 1-mile fun run, which both start at SAIC’s Cyber Innovation Center, located at 6841 Benjamin Franklin Drive, Columbia, MD.  The event includes on-site complimentary breakfast provided by Eggspectation located at 6010 University Blvd., Ellicott City, MD, as well as a complimentary after-party at Nottingham’s Tavern, located at 8850 Stanford Blvd., Columbia, MD.

Last year, over 1000 registered participants and their families turned out for the event. Since 2008, the event has contributed over $200K to the AFCEA CMD education fund. This fund supports many activities including scholarships, endowments, teacher took kit awards and our adopt-a-school program. Last year’s event contributed over $55K and AFCEA CMD expects the event to contribute over $60,000 to the Scholarship Fund this year.
Doreen Harwood, NSA Manager, will return this year as the MC for the event. Last year Ms. Harwood shared, “What a great day!  The 5K is evidence of AFCEA's roots in the community as evidenced in the overwhelming participation, as well as the organization's commitment to better that community through this and other educational fund-raising events.”

Other activities such as a Zumba dance routines, massages, face painting for the kids (and those who still feel like kids), as well as top notch music by DJ Brett Skinner, made the day a festival-like experience.

Over 60 teams competed in the 2012 5K Team Challenge and we expect to meet or beat that number this year. Prizes will be awarded to both the fastest and largest teams. In 2012, SAIC won the fastest team prize for the second year in a row, while Varen Technologies won the largest team prize.

Nottingham’s Tavern will be hosting the after-race party, which will include complimentary food, beverages, door prizes and raffles. Nottingham’s has been a sponsor of the Race for Excellence since its inception.  “As a committed sponsor, Nottingham’s is truly honored to support AFCEA in all their endless efforts of providing countless opportunities to our local youth," said Nottingham’s Event Coordinator. Additionally there will be a Kid’s Area at Nottingham’s sponsored by KeyW Corporation.

“The AFCEA 5K and Family Fun Run has tripled its participation and the amount of money raised in just five years,” said Colleen Dilly, AFCEA’s Race Director from 2008-2012. “This event is only made possible through the support from our sponsors, volunteers, and participants,” added Dilly.
