Snowquester preparation at work

The Snowquester is upon us. Kids in the region have been waiting a good two years to finally see some snow, but if you listen closely you will hear a collective groan from bosses around the Beltway as they try to navigate the slalom course that is a snow day.

Here are things you can do today that will help you manage tomorrow.

For bosses:

  • Communicate your expectations to your employees now. Go write a quick email. What do you expect your staff to do? What work absolutely needs to be done on-site? What can be done remotely? Outline your work-from-home and your vacation-day policies. Let employees know what will be expected of them if they can't get to the office.
  • Do a quick check to see who can connect to your network from home. Who can and can't access what?
  • Send around a list of employee phone numbers so everyone has the most current information.
  • Tell people when they can expect to hear from you if the office is closing and how they'll hear it (website? email? text?). Explain what "closing" means.
  • Get an idea of which workers could be affected by school and child care closings.
  • Make sure all employees have a contact person at the company. Their direct manager? You? Both?
