An Overview of New Products from the Maryland State Data Center, Department of Planning

The Maryland State Data Center (MSDC) has a tremendous amount of information that is helpful to business owners, marketers, sales personnel, demographers and others who need current data relative to Maryland and its various jurisdictions.

The BWCC has had a longstanding and excellent working relationship with the MSDC and appreciate greatly its work and the information provided.  Here’s a snapshot of some of the information available.

MIGRATION DATA BY COUNTY

Tables are based on data collected by the American Community Survey between 2006 and 2010. In the survey, household members were asked where they lived a year ago and responses were combined into a weighted average for the period. The tables provide for each current county of residence the migration flows into the county as well as the migration flows out of the county.  A net migration (movers in – movers out) is also provided.

Commuting tables show the number of MD workers who travel across county and state lines for work.  Data were collected through the American Community Survey during 2006-2010.  Highlights explain the main findings from the data while tables, charts and maps show specific detail by jurisdiction.

About 12.0 percent of Maryland workers commute to the District of Columbia, and about 13.0 percent of workers living in the nation's capital commute to Maryland.

Among Maryland’s jurisdictions, Howard and Anne Arundel counties had the largest reductions in their net out-commuter totals since 2000 (around 14,000 each….See Table 7).

Individual jurisdiction maps provide a visual resource showing the journey to work in-flows and out-flows for the 2006-2010 period based on the American Community Survey 2006-2010.  The map provided below for Anne Arundel County shows the in-migration of workers from other jurisdictions.

Following each decennial census the Office of Management and Budget releases new guidelines for delineation of the metropolitan, micropolitan and combined statistical areas.  The SDC has provided a listing of the Maryland statistical areas, the principal cities and county components along with maps and population counts.
