Maryland Tech Industry Employs 171,500, 8.6 Percent of Workforce
Washington, DC – The TechAmerica Foundation today released the 15th edition of Cyberstates, the only comprehensive look at tech employment, wages, and other key economic factors nationally and state-by-state. Cyberstates 2013: The Definitive State-by-State Analysis of the U.S. Tech Industry covers all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.Maryland’s tech industry employed 171,500 workers in 2012, accounting for 8.6 percent of the entire private sector workforce in Maryland. This was the 4th highest concentration of tech workers in the nation with only Virginia, Massachusetts, and Colorado having a higher concentration. These workers are also well compensated for their skills and education, earning an average annual wage of $96,500, the 9th highest tech wage in the nation.
“Maryland with its high concentration of highly-educated workers remains an extremely attractive location for tech companies,” said Matthew Kazmierczak, Vice President of the TechAmerica Foundation and author of Cyberstates. “Not only does Maryland have some of the highest concentrations of tech workers in the nation, but the workers are well rewarded for their skills. Tech in Maryland pays on average 94 percent more than the average private sector wage, $96,500 compared to $49,900.”
