(Laurel, MD) – May 23, 2013: The
Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) sponsored the special
award for environmental entries at the Prince George’s County “Kids for
Science” STEM Fair on Saturday, May 18, 2013. The recipient was Nicolas
Held of Robert Goddard Montessori School (Seabrook, MD).
Nicolas'
entry focused on the level of phosphates contained in biodegradable
versus non-biodegradable soap. Nicolas noted that phosphates prompt
algae blooms in rivers, lakes and the Chesapeake Bay. He found that
while hand soap is created by phosphates, non-biodegradable laundry soap
and hand washing soap that Nicholas tested had fewer phosphates than
biodegradable items.
While
this science fair is a competitive event, the primary goals are to
showcase young scientists of Prince George’s County Public Schools, to
promote an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,
and to establish partnerships with the local professional community.
