How to beat Amazon – a retailer’s guide

Amazon.com may have old-fashioned retailers sweating, but it still doesn’t have brick-and-mortar beat.

Online shopping may increase every year and no one does it better than Amazon.com Inc., which sells just about everything imaginable. It ranked as the 10th-largest retailer in the U.S. with $34 billion in 2012 sales. It was 8th-largest in the world with $61 billion in sales. More noteworthy is its growth. The 30.4 percent rise in U.S. sales between 2011 and 2012 dwarfed all other retailers.

You can see why merchants would be nervous.
