Patuxent Research Refuge Events in February

1.  Visit the National Wildlife Visitor Center to see the Hollingsworth Art Gallery. The month of January features Gabriella Rojas. She is displaying her environmentally-themed work entitled “Now" in the gallery space and hopes its three-dimensionality will be both an aesthetic and an interactive experience for the viewer.  February will feature the Central Maryland Photographers’ Guild.  To find out more about the artists visit www.cmph.smugmug.com.

2.  Hunting is in session and may be occurring in various areas throughout the refuge this fall season through January 31st. Make sure to stay on marked trails at all times and find out about closed areas when visiting.

3.  The refuge will be closed on Jan. 20th and Feb. 17th due to federal holidays.

4.  National Wildlife Refuges announce Fee Free days on Federal lands for 2014. http://www.fws.gov/news/ShowNews.cfm?ID=2155ABAD-E3B6-38F0-A76907E082D83CCF  
Free admission to Patuxent Research Refuge daily. 

5. Looking for a family nature outing??  Remember that you can stop by the National Wildlife Visitor Center's Adventure Cart to pick up indoor and outdoor activities, check out field guides, binoculars or even an adventure backpack with a few essential observation tools to go and explore the trails.

All programs are FREE, however, donations to The Friends of Patuxent are greatly appreciated!  Note: These public programs are designed for individuals/families.  Programs DO require advance reservations and may be subject to changes or cancellation due to weather or low participation.  Please call 301-497-5887 to make your reservation.  Please notify the refuge of any special needs so that you may be accommodated.  Patuxent.fws.gov

Each program in this series begins with a beautifully illustrated children’s story about wildlife.  Discover more about nature with puppets, props, and activities. Registration is required.
 

Great Backyard Bird Count!
Saturday, Feb. 15th, All Ages
Walks: 10:00 am & 1:00 pm

National Wildlife Visitor Center
Come participate in the 17th annual Backyard Bird Count!  Join a naturalist-led walk to count bird species in this citizen science project developed to help scientists all around the world develop the “big picture” about bird populations, movement and potential threats to their survival.  Or come out on your own and count birds throughout the day and record your findings with us.  No registration necessary.

Tiny Tots: Nature and Music
Sunday, Feb. 16th, 11:30 am-12:15 pm, Ages 18-42 mos
Tuesday, Feb.  18th, 10:30-11:15 am, Ages 18-42 mos

Come learn about the wildlife at the refuge through songs and rhyming.  Parental participation is required.  Registration is required.

Surviving the Cold Winter
Sunday, Feb. 16th, 1:30-3:00 pm, All Ages

Ever stare out the window on a winter day and wonder how the animals survive the cold?  Learn about the different ways animals survive until the warmth of spring arrives.  This family program will be inside and outside, so come dressed for a winter walk.  Registration is required.
 

Nature Tots: Bright Eyed & Bushy Tailed
Friday, Feb. 28th, 10:30-11:30 am & 1:00-2:00 pm, Ages 3-4

Squirrels are what it’s all about in this fun interactive program for your preschooler. Registration is required.

Programs Held at the North Tract
The North Tract is located on Rt. 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Rt. 32.

Bird Walk
Sunday, February 23rd, 8:15-10:15 am, All Ages

Search for birds in several refuge habitats on this guided hike.  Field guides and binoculars are recommended. Registration is required.
 
Owl Prowl
Sunday, February 23rd, 5:30-7:00 pm, Ages 10+

Explore the refuge at night while looking and listening for owls. Registration is required.
