Airline Announces Shift of Three International Markets from AirTran to Southwest Service
Southwest
Airlines today announced that service on three international routes
from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI
Marshall) would shift from AirTran Airways to Southwest on July 1, 2014. Nonstop service between BWI Marshall and Aruba, Montego Bay, and Nassau will be Southwest flights starting July 1.
“This
is an important first step as Southwest Airlines officially makes the
move to the international market,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, Chief
Executive Officer for BWI Marshall. “The significant move by Southwest
is important for BWI Marshall and our customers. We look forward to
working with Southwest in coming years as the airline grows its
international service.”
International
passenger traffic has grown steadily in recent years at BWI Marshall.
In 2012, international passengers grew by 21 percent at BWI Marshall.
International passenger traffic increased by nearly 20 percent in the
past twelve months through November 2013.
