WSSC Wins AMWA Platinum Award

The award was presented for utility management excellence

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) yesterday received the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies’ (AMWA) top utility management award, the Platinum Award for Utility Excellence.

“AMWA awards recognize the extraordinary performance of water agencies where management vision and employee commitment create a sustainable utility producing ample supplies of clean, safe drinking water,” said AMWA President James McDaniel, Senior Assistant General Manager, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. “The communities served by these award winners should be proud of the accomplishments of their forward-thinking, exceptionally well-managed public utilities.”

“I am extremely proud to accept this award on behalf of the many WSSC employees who work tirelessly to deliver high quality drinking water to the 1.8 million residents of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties,” WSSC General Manager/CEO Jerry N. Johnson said at the AMWA annual meeting in Newport, Rhode Island. “This is a confirmation of quality and excellence we strive to achieve on behalf of our customers. It is a confirmation that this great organization is heading in the right direction. ”

In citing WSSC’s performance, AMWA noted WSSC’s plans to replace 41 miles of water pipe in FY2012; forming the Bi-County Infrastructure Working Group to assess funding alternatives; the establishment of five asset management plans and the use of acoustic fiber optics to monitor large prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) transmission lines for signs of weakness.

“Sustainability is clearly demonstrated in issues related to water supply, green and efficient acquisition of energy, reduction of greenhouse gas and community outreach and education,” AMWA said in a statement. Moreover, it said the Potomac Water Filtration Plant has the largest active UV disinfection system in the country. And finally, it noted that WSSC is one of the first utilities to have its own smart phone “app“ which provides customers the ability to pay their bills, receive alerts and report problems from their smart phones.http://www.wsscwater.com/wsscmobile

WSSC is one of nine utilities in the country that received the Platinum Award for Utility Excellence. AMWA is an organization of the largest publicly owned drinking water suppliers in the United States.
