AACC's Health Information Technology Program Accredited

The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education has accredited Anne Arundel Community College’s Health Information Technology Associate of Applied Science degree program.

The accreditation allows AACC students who complete the program to take the national registered health information technology exam to become a certified Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), including recent graduates of the 63-credit-hour program. The college recognized the program’s first graduates in May 2011.

The program began in 2009 because of the expected workforce need for people to manage electronic health records. By a 2004 executive order, the federal government called for widespread use of interoperable electronic health records within 10 years. Health information technicians organize and turn data into information and help determine what information is needed, when and how it that information is used and how its accuracy and consistency is verified.
