General Manager Johnson Receives National Environmental Achievement Award

Johnson cited for contributions to environmental protection and wastewater management


Jerry N. Johnson, General Manager and CEO, of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), was presented today with the 2012 National Environmental Achievement Award by the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA). The award signifies recognition of outstanding contributions to environmental protection and wastewater management.

The award is annually presented to current or former elected or appointed public officials at the local, state and federal level of government who have demonstrated exemplary commitment and service to their community, the environment and to NACWA. “With this award, NACWA honors your distinguished career as a municipal servant and champion of clean water,” a NACWA spokesman said.

NACWA cited WSSC’s “Can the Grease” campaign as an example of WSSC’s commitment to environmental protection and clean water.  The campaign focuses on educating residential customers that the accumulation of grease over time restricts the flow and may cause sewer backups. In February, WSSC received the 2012 National Environmental Achievement Award in the Public Information and Education-Video Category for the Feasty Boys promotional “Can the Grease” video, “Can It, Cool It and Throw It Away.”
