The Washington Post Co. is selling its newspaper publishing business to Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos for $250 million, a stunning announcement that took most of the Washington community by genuine surprise.
It will be the first change in ownership for the company since
Katharine Graham's father, Eugene Meyer, bought the paper that would one
day help bring down a president at an auction in 1933. The Graham
family still owns most of the publicly traded but closely held parent
company.
Bezos is buying the paper directly. The purchase does not involve Amazon.
