1. Friends of Patuxent Holiday Bazaar this Saturday!
Saturday, December 7th, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, National Wildlife Visitor Center.
Shop
for wild and not-so-wild new and gently used treasures. The Bazaar will
also feature unique gifts from local crafters, a bake sale, a
Kid-Friendly shop, games of wildlife bingo, live animals and the Crane
Café for a light lunch.
All
proceeds will benefit the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and the

3. Visit the National Wildlife Visitor Center to see the Hollingsworth Art Gallery.
The
month of December will feature artist Mary Lou Troutman. Several of her
works feature baskets full of her favorite crustaceans, but her lovely
paintings also include the creeks, marshes, rivers and wildlife of the
Chesapeake Bay region.
January
will feature Gabriella Rojas, whose environmentally-themed work
entitled “Now" will be recreated in the gallery space. She hopes its
three-dimensionality will be both an aesthetic and an interactive
experience for the viewer.

4. Hunting is in session and may be occurring in various areas throughout the refuge this fall season through January 31st. Make sure to stay on marked trails at all times and find out about closed areas when visiting.

you know that the Chesapeake Bay is close to all of us? Join our
special guest from Masonville Cove Environmental Education Campus to
learn more about the critters of the Bay through stories, songs and
crafts. Registration is required.

Opossums
Thursday, January 9th, 10:00-10:45 am, Ages 4-5
Each
program in this series begins with a beautifully illustrated children’s
story about wildlife. Discover more about nature with puppets, props,
and activities. Registration is required.
Bird Count 4 Kids!
Saturday, January 11th, 8:30 am -1:00 pm, Ages 5-14
Join
experienced birders for the Patuxent Research Refuge Bird Count 4 Kids.
Discover what birds are out and about in Maryland during the winter.
This half-day event is patterned after the National Audubon Society’s
Christmas Bird Count. Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have
them (some will be provided). Dress for the weather and wear
comfortable shoes or boots. Bring a brown-bag lunch and a curiosity for
birding!

the life of an otter in this “otterageous,” hands-on program. Learn
why otters are so at home in the water. Registration is required.
Winter Walk
Saturday, January 18th, 1:00-2:00 pm, Ages 5+
Join
a naturalist on this forest walk to learn about common trees while
looking and listening for signs of wildlife along the trail.

Awesome Opossums
Thursday, January 23rd, 10:30 am-12:00 pm, Ages 5-7
What
makes opossums awesome? Do they really hang upside down in trees by
their tails and have pouches like kangaroos? Come explore the world of
the opossum in this fun hands-on program which includes a short winter
hike. Registration is required.
