December 2013 and January 2014 Events at Patuxent Research Refuge

1. Friends of Patuxent Holiday Bazaar this Saturday!  
Saturday, December 7th, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, National Wildlife Visitor Center.
Shop for wild and not-so-wild new and gently used treasures. The Bazaar will also feature unique gifts from local crafters, a bake sale, a Kid-Friendly shop, games of wildlife bingo, live animals and the Crane Café for a light lunch.

All proceeds will benefit the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and the Patuxent Research Refuge.  For more information please visit www.friendsofpatuxent.org

2.  Refuge closures for December listed below:
National Wildlife Visitor Center and grounds: Closing at 1:30 pm Dec. 24th and 31st; closed Dec. 25th and Jan. 1st.  For additional information please call the Visitor Center at 301-497-5772.

North Tract Visitor Contact Station and grounds: Closing at 12:00 pm Dec. 24th and 31st; closed Dec. 25th and Jan. 1st.  For additional information please call the North Tract Contact Station at 301-497-5770.  

3.  Visit the National Wildlife Visitor Center to see the Hollingsworth Art Gallery. 
The month of December will feature artist Mary Lou Troutman. Several of her works feature baskets full of her favorite crustaceans, but her lovely paintings also include the creeks, marshes, rivers and wildlife of the Chesapeake Bay region. 

January will feature Gabriella Rojas, whose environmentally-themed work entitled “Now" will be recreated in the gallery space. She hopes its three-dimensionality will be both an aesthetic and an interactive experience for the viewer.

4.  Hunting is in session and may be occurring in various areas throughout the refuge this fall season through January 31st. Make sure to stay on marked trails at all times and find out about closed areas when visiting.

Nature Tots: Chesapeake Bay Critters
Friday, January 3rd10:30-11:30 am & 1:00-2:00 pm, Ages 3-4
Did you know that the Chesapeake Bay is close to all of us? Join our special guest from Masonville Cove Environmental Education Campus to learn more about the critters of the Bay through stories, songs and crafts.  Registration is required.

Based on Books: Monthly Nature Series
Opossums
Thursday, January 9th10:00-10:45 am, Ages 4-5
Each program in this series begins with a beautifully illustrated children’s story about wildlife.  Discover more about nature with puppets, props, and activities.  Registration is required.

Bird Count 4 Kids!
Saturday, January 11th, 8:30 am -1:00 pm, Ages 5-14
Join experienced birders for the Patuxent Research Refuge Bird Count 4 Kids. Discover what birds are out and about in Maryland during the winter.  This half-day event is patterned after the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count.  Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them (some will be provided).  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes or boots.  Bring a brown-bag lunch and a curiosity for birding!
At least one parent or guardian must attend. Please register by January 7th by calling 301-497-5887. Registration is required.

Tiny Tots: Nature and Music
Sunday, January 12th, 11:30 am-12:15 pm, Ages 18-42 mos
Monday, January 13th, 10:30-11:15 am, Ages 18-42 mos
Come learn about the wildlife at the refuge through songs and rhyming.  Parental participation is required.  Registration is required.
An Otter’s Tale
Wednesday, January 15th10:00-11:00 am, Ages 5-7
Live the life of an otter in this “otterageous,” hands-on program.  Learn why otters are so at home in the water. Registration is required. 

Winter Walk
Saturday, January 18th1:00-2:00 pm, Ages 5+
Join a naturalist on this forest walk to learn about common trees while looking and listening for signs of wildlife along the trail.  Registration is required.

Awesome Opossums
Thursday, January 23rd, 10:30 am-12:00 pm, Ages 5-7
What makes opossums awesome? Do they really hang upside down in trees by their tails and have pouches like kangaroos? Come explore the world of the opossum in this fun hands-on program which includes a short winter hike.  Registration is required.

The North Tract is located on Rt. 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Rt. 32.

Bird Walk
Sunday, January 19th8:15-10:15 am, All Ages
Search for birds in several refuge habitats on this guided hike.  Field guides and binoculars are recommended.  Registration is required.

Owl Prowl
Sunday, January 19th4:45-6:15 pm, Ages 10+
Explore the refuge at night while looking and listening for owls. Registration is required.
